“You’re going to college where?”

Those were the words my mom said to me as I called her from the Atlanta airport during my senior year of high school. She wasn’t too thrilled. Here’s that story… My father was in the military, and as such we traveled around quite a bit. I went to high school in both Virginia and California. I had stops before that in Wisconsin and Arizona. I was no stranger to travel and relocation by the time I graduated from high school in Novato, CA, just north of San Francisco. So I’m sure no one will be surprised to hear that I ... Read More

It’s been one of those days, or weeks, or something…

I’m sitting here Friday night. Amy and I just put the kids to bed. I’m exhausted, and it shows. Amy looks like she could take on the world, but I know she’s spent too. I’m not sure why I’m so tired. I’ve kind of felt like this all week. It wasn’t a particulary stressful week. But the week seemed to drag on. And on. And on. Have you ever felt like that? What I thought I’d do is go over the week, see what I remember and what sticks out, and try to come up with a reason for my ... Read More

Moderation folks, that’s the word of the day…

Halloween will shortly be here. After that Thanksgiving. Then Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day. You get the picture. The last three months of each year is an onslaught of holidays, and we all tend to celebrate with food. Usually an overabundance of meals, desserts, drinks. How many of you can barely get off the couch on Thanksgiving afternoon? Don’t be bashful, I’m raising my hand too. And it’s because of the impending holiday season that I wanted to spend a moment discussing moderation. I’ll be the first to admit I love food. I also love desserts. And I love ... Read More

The Bourbon Chase, no, not a drinking game…

Tomorrow Amy and I will be departing for Lexington, KY to participate in The Bourbon Chase. It’s a 200 mile, 12 person, running relay that follows the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky. We start the race at the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, KY, have exchange points and run past a bunch of other distilleries (Woodford Reserve, Makers Mark, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, etc.), and end on Main Street in downtown Lexington. The race runs overnight, and the weather is looking less than stellar. It’s tiring, physically demanding, and the van starts to smell. And this will be my fourth year ... Read More

Don’t tell anyone, but I have a favorite child…

My youngest son, Lincoln, has autism. I noticed he was different shortly after his first birthday. He wasn’t reaching his milestones like our other children. Over the course of the next year, through many tests and examinations by various specialists, I was finally told he fell on the autism spectrum. I didn’t need to hear the “official” diagnosis. I had known for quite some time. I tried to deny there was anything wrong. That it was just a phase Lincoln would grow out of. But I always knew the truth, even if I couldn’t admit it to myself. Having a child ... Read More

I’d love to exercise, but I just don’t have the time…

How many times have you heard that phrase? How many times have you said it? Don’t be afraid to admit it. At one time or another, everyone gets overwhelmed, swamped with work, family, life obligations. Most days I get home from work and the last thing I want to do is exercise. At the end of a long day, I’d much rather spend time relaxing with family or watching television. What usually transpires after work, though, is dinner, laundry, cleaning, kid’s homework, showers, brushing teeth, bedtime routines. The list goes on and on. How in the world with work and ...
